Defining the 7 Mountains The concept of the 7 Mountains originated in 1975, when Bill Bright, the founder of Campus Crusade, and Loren Cunningham, the founder of Youth With a Mission, each received illumination from God concerning a method by which nations are discipled. The two men met for lunch in Colorado and discovered the similarities between their individual insights. During that same time frame, Francis Schaeffer was likewise studying and teaching a similar message.
The 7 Mountain teaching states that there are seven spheres of influence or seven mind molders of culture than must be influenced by the Word of God before a society can be transformed by the Kingdom of God. In Matthew 28: 19-20 Jesus commissioned the church when He stated, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen." The command to teach nations lays the foundation for and is the essence of the 7 Mountain message. All spheres of life are under the sovereign rulership of God. The seven spheres are: family, business, religion, arts & entertainment, media, education, and government. Although there are many sub-categories within each mountain or sphere, these seven delineations serve to identify the areas of society's cultural mind molders. Each sphere is defined by and finds its laws of operation within the pages of scripture. |
